What is metabolic syndrome

Metabolic syndrome is the presence of a cluster of risk factors that puts an individual at high risk for heart disease and stroke.

Diagnosis

Metabolic syndrome is said to be present when three or more of the following conditions are present:

  1. High blood glucose levels
  2. Low HDL cholesterol levels in the blood
  3. High triglyceride levels in the blood
  4. Excess body fat around the waist or “apple-shaped” body
  5. high blood pressure
